What an amazing life Mr. Suyematsu lived. I grew personally and emotionally reading about his life and all the adversity he and his loved ones experienced and overcame. So inspiring.

Dear Family,
Everyday I pass by Akio's room at Kline Galland I think of him and of you all. You have been inspirations to us all in hospice and I am sure I will never meet a more devoted famiy than yours. Akio deserved the best of care and had it around the clock to his last day. I wish for you all some peace and time to enjoy together the wonderful memories and lessons that Akio has left behind. I picture him now in an eternal garden with nothing to do but what he wants.
I'm so sorry to have missed the memorial at the farm. It was something I was looking forward to attending, but I was on call and the weekend just turned upside down and there was much to do for many. Akio would understand that work comes first.
I hope our paths meet again in happier circumstances. We are forever together in our great affection for Akio.

We picked berries on Akio's farm during the 60's. I remember him as being very kind and fair. He was tolerant of our teenage pranks, but he didn't hesitate to enforce proper behavior. He conveyed the feeling that he really cared about us. After reading the story of his life, I am convinced that he did.
Even as a teenager, I was impressed by his respect for, and care of, his parents.

Akio lived a life of consummate dignity and integrity...leaving us all a model to admire and follow. His quiet, unassuming manner, his capacity for hard work, and his talent as a farmer have made him a standout in the community. Yet, he would be the first to object to being called a "standout." His friends will long remember his soft-spoken advice, given only when prodded and offered with caution. It's been a rare privilege to know this man and to experience the fruits of his labors.

Akio's passing is still hard to comprehend... I feel priviledeged to have known him. I have never known a man who was more dedicated or hard working - a true pioneer. He was a tough businessman but at the same time had a wonderful boyishness with a shy smile. Good bye and bless you Akio you are deeply missed.

I have many wonderful memories of the farm, taking my children to pick flats of raspberries, going to the pumpkin fields, attending different celebrations there. He was a generous man, wanting to share with everyone and keep the space as farmland. He will be missed and his legacy will go on.

We raised our children on Bainbridge Island, living there for 23 years. We loved going to Akio's farm to pick strawberries and for our Christmas tree. We will always remember his kindness and answering our gardening questions. Akio's integrity, hard work and patience will be remembered by us all. Our thoughts are with the family!
