Gregory John
Thies
Feb 24, 1950 — Jun 8, 2026
Gregory 'Greg' John Thies passed away on June 8, 2026, after a long journey with Parkinson's disease and dementia. He was 76 years old. He lived on Bainbridge Island with his wife starting in 1984. Greg was born on February 24, 1950, at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, Washington, to John Edward Thies and Sylvia Thora Hall Thies, both of whom preceded him in death. He grew up in the Seattle area and went on to graduate from Yale University, a milestone of which his family was always proud.
After college, Greg began working at Seattle City Light, starting as a summer meter reader and eventually working alongside the Seattle Police Department on power theft cases. When his wife, Ann, entered law school, Greg was her steadfast support. He later made the decision to stay home with their children, John and Alison, throwing himself wholeheartedly into the role. He coached girls' softball and baseball, became a dedicated Boy Scout leader, and was the kind of present, hands-on father that kids remember forever.
As the children grew older, Greg joined Ann's law firm as an appeals brief writer, where he developed a reputation for rescuing cases lost at hearing and having them remanded for another hearing.
Most people who knew Greg remarked on his calm, pleasant, and easygoing personality. Greg's lifelong passions were hiking in the Olympic Mountains and photography. He created beautiful calendars from his photographs and traveled widely, visiting Antarctica, Greenland, Greece, Spain, Hungary, and France. To the great surprise of his traveling companions, his favorite part of a trip to China was the embroidery.
He served as Branch Chair of the Kitsap Mountaineers in 2008 and 2009 and was a member of the CERT team with Bainbridge Prepares. He also volunteered with Friends of the Farm and Bainbridge Trails.
Greg is survived by his wife, Ann W. Cook; his son, John Williams Thies; his daughter, Alison Mabbutt (Prescott); his grandchildren, Sedna Kelly Thies, Edward Gregory Mabbutt, and his brothers, Rodrick Thies and Timothy Thies. A gathering to celebrate Greg's life will be held later this summer, and notice will be given when the date, time, and place are determined. May he find peace and rest in the mountains he loved so dearly. His family deeply appreciates all the kind messages they have received and are grateful to have had Greg in their lives for as long as they did.
Arrangements entrusted to Cook Family Funeral Home of Bainbridge Island, WA.
