Surrounded by loved ones, Thomas Randolph Greene passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 23rd, at the UW Medical Center — Montlake.
Tom was born on June 14th, 1953, to Richard and Mary Greene of Seattle, Washington. He grew up in Laurelhurst, where he spent his youth exploring local marshes with his sister Betsy, attending UW Husky football games, and skiing at Crystal Mountain. He went on to attend Claremont McKenna College to study Economics, and upon graduation in 1975, he returned to the Pacific Northwest to begin his career in the frozen fruit industry.
In 1979, Tom married the love of his life, Betsy Lu Booth of Post Falls, Idaho. They soon moved to Bainbridge Island, a place close to Tom’s heart where he had spent his childhood summers on Pleasant Beach. In 1988, Tom founded Interpack Northwest Frozen Foods, Inc. He became a familiar fixture in the community, biking daily to his office in Winslow — always stopping along the way to pick up litter by the roadside.
Tom made friends easily, connecting with people in his own unique way. He truly treasured relationships and had a knack for leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met. A dedicated community member and father, he spent many seasons coaching Little League baseball and softball, attending school board meetings, and volunteering at First Church of Christ, Scientist, Bainbridge Island. He was a passionate Seattle Mariners fan and was known for sending detailed play-by-play updates on the family thread during close games. Perhaps his favorite activity of all was backpacking with his kids in the Olympic Mountains, with Mt. Townsend, Silver Lake, and Buckhorn Wilderness among their favorite destinations. An avid kayaker, he also logged hundreds of hours on the water, often being spotted paddling off Point White, heading toward Manchester.
What Tom loved the most was being with his family. He lived his life as a humble, fun-loving, hard-working, and honorable man. He often spoke of his great-aunts' "wisdom of the ages"—that a man keep his word. It was the standard of integrity that he truly lived by, and the legacy he leaves behind.
Tom is survived by his wife of 47 years, Betsy Greene of Bainbridge Island, WA. He is remembered by his children: Alex Greene (Kimberly) and Nate Greene (Jenilee), all of Jacksonville, FL; Lizzie Gillum (Kyle) of Oklahoma City, OK; and Willy Greene of Phoenix, AZ; alongside his eight beloved grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Betsy Sander (Jeff) of Jacksonville, FL; his Uncle Jonathan Randolph (Elaine) of Tyler, TX; and a large, extended family of cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews whom he loved dearly.
A celebration of Tom's life will be held on Sunday, July 19th, at 2:30 pm at IslandWood on Bainbridge Island. All who knew and loved him are welcome to attend.
Arrangements entrusted to Cook Family Funeral Home of Bainbridge Island, WA.
