Alice McMicken Koch

April 22, 1922 - January 9, 2021

Alice McMicken Koch passed away peacefully Saturday morning at Madrona House. Family members were with her to her last breath.

Alice was born to Constance and Maurice McMicken in Seattle on April 22, 1922, after which the family returned to their Bainbridge Island home. Alice and her sisters enjoyed an idyllic childhood. Eldest sister Elizabeth (Betty Kelley) and youngest sister Joan (Joan McMicken Wilt) along with their cousins and a group of friends, added to the merriment with hours spent on the beach at Wing Point or enjoying time at the McMicken home. Many happy hours were spent around their afternoon ritual of tea. The three sisters also remembered the war years fondly. Their mother, Connie, was very involved in the Winslow USO, and opened their home to soldiers, sailors and Marines. Betty married Lou Kelley, who in turn brought a fellow Navy man, Joe Koch back to meet the remaining sisters. Joe and Alice then began a courtship that lasted well into the next century.

Following the war, Alice married Joseph Myers Koch, Jr., upon his return from serving aboard ship in the Pacific theater. They began their married life in Boston, while Joe obtained his Masters in Business Administration at Harvard.

Alice and Joe made their next home in Montclair, New Jersey, where they enjoyed the young years of their children, Gretchen Moores-Hooper, Joseph Myers Koch III and their youngest, Caroline Brent Koch. Joe relocated the family to Bellevue when he began his career with Boeing. After retirement and the children all grown, Alice and Joe moved to Bainbridge Island, where Alice had begun her life’s journey.

Alice was a dear, sweet person, who loved poetry and the joys of family life. She and Joe had friends all over the country, as well as grandchildren from Maine to Seattle. Alice was predeceased by her son, Joseph Myers Koch III (2005) and her husband, Joseph Myers Koch, Jr. (2010). She is survived by daughters Gretchen and Carrie.son-in-law John Hooper, daughter-in-law Susan Koch, as well as grandchildren, Alison, Alex, Sarah, Emily, Andrew, Stephanie and Gretchen. She also leaves three great-grandchildren: Eleanor, Joseph and Madeline.

A private, graveside service will be held, under Covid restrictions.

Arrangements are entrusted to Cook Family Funeral Home on Bainbridge Island, WA
