Arthur Moskin

d. May 12, 2008

passed away on Monday, May 12, 2008 at Clear Brook Inn Assisted Living in Silverdale, Washington. He was born on August 28, 1913 and was 94 years of age.A man who loved soccer and tennis almost as much as mathematics, Art was born August 28, 1913 in Lima, Ohio to Julius and Mabel (Strauss) Moskin. He was raised in New York City and attended The Manlius School near Syracuse. At age 19, Art graduated from Harvard ('33) with a degree in English Literature. For nine years after graduation, Art worked for his family's retail clothing business. He then served as a Captain in the U.S. Army during World War II in France and Germany and was awarded the Bronze Star. On leaving the Army, Art married and headed to the Seattle area for a new life on his own farm in Sumner. While farming, he attended University of Washington where he received a master's degree in mathematics in 1951. Following a divorce, Art moved to San Francisco and joined the staff of the United States Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory, where he was instrumental in the development of the laboratory's computer systems to study nuclear weapon effects. He worked for the lab for 18 years before retiring at age 56.Art married Tweedie Peters in 1956 and adopted her two children, son Bill and daughter Denise. Art and Tweedie shared the same beautiful home in Hillsborough, CA for 48 years. Tweedie died in 2004, shortly after their move to Bainbridge Island to be closer to Bill and his family. Art spent the last year of his life at Clearbrook Inn in Silverdale where he remained active, making new friends and spending time in his perpetual quest for knowledge, taking video courses in math and physics, and re-reading his favorite books.Art is survived by his son, Bill Moskin of Bainbridge Island, Bill's wife Andy, and grandsons Noah and Daniel; his daughter Dennie McMurdo of Reno NV, grandson David and granddaughter Allie; his sister Gloria Ravitch of San Francisco, and nephew Jeff Moskin of Los Angeles. Art was a kind and thoughtful man - a true gentleman - as all who knew him will agree. He will be missed.Memorial contributions may be made to Bainbridge Island Friends of the Library.
