Herbert Alan Armstrong

Herbert Alan Armstrong, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at his home in Kingston, Washington. He was born on April 3, 1935 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota to Fairbeorn Henry and Betty Renny Armstrong.He married the love of his life, Elda Nordheim, on June 8, 1958 in Walla Walla. He was 82 years of age. Herbert received a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from Washington State College in 1958. He worked as a civil engineer in Washington and Arizona, a professional land surveyor in Washington and was a partner in Roats Engineering and co-owner of ADA Engineering (both in Poulsbo).Herb was well known as Poulsbo City Engineer for 28 years. He was an avid farmer of organic fruit and vegetables, livestock, oysters at Dungeness and Christmas trees at St. Mick's Christmas Tree Farm. He was also a US Army Veteran. Herbert was an active member of the Poulsbo Lions Club, Sigma Nu Fraternity, ASCE, Ducks Unlimited, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Audubon of Kitsap County and the Dungeness Beach Association. Herbert was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed the great outdoors and natural areas for hiking, backpacking, bird watching, clamming and crabbing.He played a significant role in the Poulsbo Lions Club Park, Raab Park Nature Trail and Shelter, Poulsbo Boardwalk, Camp Leo, Nelson Park, "Hooked on Fish" children's fishing derby, Lions Eye Bank, Lions Pancake Breakfast and Lions Flags. Herbert was co-owner of ADA Engineering of Poulsbo for 52 years. He also owned and operated Saint Mick's Tree Farm of Kingston for 40 years and his organic farm stand for 12 years. He enjoyed singing in the choir at First Lutheran Church.Herbert was well known to friends and family for his amazing sense of humor, kind words, tales of his adventures and storytelling. He and his wife Elda enjoyed traveling to Europe, Scandinavia, Alaska and the Artic Circle, Iceland, Africa and the British Isles. He was a former 4H leader, former King Lion and Lions Club International Melvin Jones Fellow award winner. He also was a performer in the Bainbridge Light Opera. He enjoyed collecting bird specimens for the LA County Museum.Herbert is survived by his loving wife Elda Armstrong of Kingston, WA, sister Elizabeth Krause (Gary) of Boise, Idaho, son Greg Armstrong (Joan) of Lacey, Washington, daughter Ann Armstrong of Poulsbo, WA, son Mike Armstrong (Lisa Kastner) of Bainbridge Island, WA, grandchildren; Nathan (Courtney), Ryan (Cassie), Jennifer(Mikio), Tyler, Mary, Corinna, Langholm, Finnegan and Kinsley. He also leaves behind his great granddaughter Lillian. There are also numerous close friends and family. He was preceded in death by his father and mother and his brother Howard Armstrong.Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Memorial Service on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the First Lutheran Church in Poulsbo, Washington.
