died in early December of a lingering disease. He was 84 years old. Bill was born and raised in Boulder, CO where he graduated from the University of Colorado summa cum laude in 1944. He continued his studies at Cornell University obtaining his PhD. in mathematics in 1947. He won a Peirce Instructorship at Harvard before moving on to a long career at the University of Michigan. He was a Fulbright Research Scholar in 1951-52 and a Sloan Research Fellow in in 1957-60 studying in London and Gottingen, Germany. He wrote several books in the field of number theory which remain in print.In 1977 he became Executive Director of the American Mathematical Society head quartered in Providence , R.I. which led him to travel on business to Russia several times during the Cold War and to China and Japan as well. He retired in 1988. In retirement Bill and his wife Ann bought a sailboat, taught themselves to sail and lived aboard for three years while traveling from Narragansett Bay down the Inter Coastal Waterway to Florida, into the Caribbean and finally as far as Grenada before returning home. Later they retired to Bainbridge where they have lived for over a decade to be close to their family in Seattle. While in Bainbridge Bill enjoyed many volunteer activities such as tutoring math at the high school and computer use at the library. He was a long time volunteer at Helpline House and more recently Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers. He is remembered by friends for his gentlemanly demeanor and wry sense of humor.Bill is survived by his wife Ann, son Randall, grandson Benjamin and daughter in law Loyce.Memorials may be sent to Helpline house and IVC.Arrangements by Cook Family Funeral Home.
