Anina Marie McCormic
October 23, 1944 - August 2, 2025
Anina Marie (Tardif) McCormic was born on October 23, 1944, at Providence Hospital in Seattle, to a Danish mother (Edith Madsen) and French-Canadian father, Dr. Ernest Tardif, a surgeon. The eldest and tiniest of five, she grew up on Queen Anne Hill and attended St. Anne’s School, followed by Forest Ridge School and Queen Anne High School (class of ‘62), where she made many lifelong friends. She later recalled looking out the window of her high school homeroom class and watching the Space Needle being constructed.
She attended Seattle University and met her future husband, Robert (Bob) McCormic, at a “People to People” conference at Washington State University. In 1966, they married in California, where they made their first home in a cottage in Berkeley with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge, and were joined a few years later by three children, Keith, Sarah, and Mary.
In 1974 they moved to Bainbridge Island, where Bob had grown up. At their home on Port Madison, Anina indulged her passion for gardening, creating a stunning garden and learning from local landscaper Tad Sakuma, her friend and mentor.
Her home was full of flowers she had grown, nutritious food, and a beautifully set table (always set with flowers and candles) where she hosted family and friends from near and far for lovingly crafted meals. After her children left the nest, she was a dedicated volunteer at Helpline House for many years.
Of her many roles in life, her favorite was undoubtedly that of grandmother. She doted on each of her three grandchildren, helping to care for them, playing with them, and delighting in watching them grow. She supported all of them unreservedly.
Over the course of her final seven years, Anina battled two cancers with courage and humor, winning her first battle with pancreatic cancer before a second cancer took her from us. She spent her last six years at Winslow Manor, where she made many true friends and was nurtured by a loving community. She also brought her gardening passion to her new home, spending countless hours beautifying the surrounding grounds.
As Anina, at 4’10”, liked to say, “Good things come in small packages.” Those who knew her would agree.
Anina is survived by her three children, Keith McCormic, Sarah McCormic (Benjamin Ryan), and Mary McCormic-McInnis (Josh McInnis); grandchildren Lorna and Anders McInnis and Mary McCorbias; siblings John (Debi) Tardif, Yvonne Ringgenberg, and Catherine (David) Tardif-Douglin, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, cousins, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob McCormic, daughter-in-law Charlie McCormic, brother Joseph Tardif, and brother-in-law Robert Ringgenberg.
A memorial service will be held on September 13 at 2pm at St. Barnabas Church on Bainbridge Island. The family requests that donations in Anina’s memory be made to Helpline House and Gender Justice League (www.genderjusticeleague.org).
