Carol N. Chapman

July 27, 1936 — July 21, 2024

Bainbridge Island

Carol Newton Chapman of Bainbridge Island, a loving wife, awesome mother, and fantastic grandmother, passed peacefully in her sleep on July 21, 2024, just a few days shy of her 88th birthday.

She was born Carol Lee Newton in 1936 in Akron Ohio to Benjamin Danley Newton and Rita Bernice Beaupre.

Both of her parents were killed in a car accident when she was 10 years old and she and her younger sister were raised by their grandparents in St. Anne, Illinois.

She attended Butler College in Indianapolis and was a proud member of Kappa Alpha Theta.

She married Joseph W Hartley Jr on the steps of the Vatican in Rome and paid a street vendor 50 cents to take their wedding photos.

Joe and Carol moved to Maui, Hawaii in 1958 where she raised her two sons, Joe and Jeff while her then-husband worked first for Baldwin Packers and then for Maui Land and Pine.

She opened and operated Tiger Lily, a high-end women’s fashion store with her best friend Gini Mahnken Baldwin.

She was a passionate cook, a consummate entertainer, and a wine devotee.

With eight of her close friends, she co-published two cookbooks, Maui Cooks and Maui Cooks Again which highlighted local island recipes.

Later in life she met and married the love of her life, Donald Chapman, and together they left Hawaii and made their home on Bainbridge Island, Washington

She is survived by her sister, Rita Kay Vadeboncoeur of Colorado Springs, her two sons Joe and Jeff Hartley, and her three grandchildren, Jessi, Drew, and Camille.

She will be sorely missed by her family and by her large cadre of very close friends.

Condolences and remembrances can be e-mailed to Jeff at jnhartley@mindspring.com

Arrangements entrusted to Cook Family Funeral Home of Bainbridge Island, WA.
