Grant Anton Winther, a beloved member of the Bainbridge Island community and a distinguished legal professional, passed away on April 30, 2025, in Silverdale, WA. Born on June 16, 1931, in Seattle, WA, Grant was the son of Harry and Hilma Winther. He graduated from Franklin High School before continuing his education at the University of Washington.
Following his studies, Grant proudly served as an officer in the Navy, where he was deployed to the Far East. After his military service, he took advantage of the GI Bill to attend law school at Santa Clara University. Grant built a successful legal career in San Francisco, practicing law for over twenty years.
In 1963, Grant married Barbara, and together they moved to Bainbridge Island in the 1980s. They quickly became integral members of the local community, supporting numerous island organizations, including the library, historical museum, and art museum. Over the years, Grant and Barbara traveled extensively, visiting more than 50 countries, which enriched their shared experiences and memories. Sadly, Barbara passed away on July 18, 2018, after 55 years of marriage.
An avid outdoorsman, Grant dedicated much of his time to volunteer service. He was a ski patrol volunteer and also served as a park ranger in the Olympic National Park. Among his many achievements, he summited Mount Rainier and Mount Baker, showcasing his love for the great outdoors. Additionally, Grant was a passionate sailor, owning several sailboats during his time on Bainbridge Island and serving as an officer of the Port Madison Yacht Club. His commitment to safety on the water was evident in his impressive tenure as a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, where he rose to the rank of Division Commander.
Grant Anton Winther's legacy will endure through the countless lives he touched with his generosity, service, and passion for both community and adventure. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A graveside service to honor Grant's life and to lay he and Barbara to rest together was held on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Hillcrest Cemetery, 5535 Old Mill Road NE, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110.
