Joyce Ann Veterane

October 1, 1941 — May 16, 2020

Joyce Ann Veterane, wife of David, passed peacefully at age 78 on May 16th at home surrounded by family. Born October 1st, 1941 in Hannibal, MO, she was the daughter of the late Pastor Duncan and Loreen Crockett.

BIO
Joyce attended Northeast High School in Kansas City where she lived since 4th grade and attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, MO, 1959-61. In 1961, she was married to David and moved to Seattle, WA to complete her BS in Psychology at the University of Washington. During this short time in Seattle, she also gave birth to 2 of her 3 children, Kathy, and Susan, as well as launching her career at Harborview Emergency Center as a Social worker. After moving to Portland, Oregon in 1967 with David to start his career in banking, Joyce landed a Director role at Albina Head Start Day Care and had her 3rd child, Andrew. After moving back to the Seattle area on Bainbridge Island in 1973, Joyce went on to work in numerous outreach programs. Joyce was a creative force in her community: Starting the Harrison Medical Center Social Worker program, Coordinator for the Trident Impact Program, Bainbridge Day Care Center, Vietnamese Resettlement, and most recently, a founder of the IVC (Island Volunteer Caregivers).
Joyce’s passion for music and theater was evident in her piano playing, enjoyment of Jazz, and involvement in community theater. She was much-loved by her friends and family and we will all miss her.

SURVIVORS
Joyce is survived by David, her husband of 59 years, daughters Kathy Veterane and husband Robert Bates of Bellingham, WA; Susan Veterane Todd and husband Greg Todd of Edmonds, WA, granddaughters Leah and Molly; and son Andrew and Jennifer Veterane of Seattle, WA, and grandson Ryder; her sister Marilee Kirkbride of Louisville, KY, husband Dan, niece Danielle and nephew Jonathon.

A Celebration of Joyce’s life is being planned and will happen when it is sufficiently safe to gather. Contact any immediate family member for more information.
