Mary Elizabeth Johnson

Mary Elizabeth (MaryBeth) Johnson, nee’ Manuel passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 24th, 2022 on Bainbridge Island, Wash. Born Aug 17th, 1920 to Agnes Elizabeth and John William Manuel, in Olathe, Colo. on a farm her parents homesteaded. She will be dearly missed by her family members and many friends. MaryBeth was married to Roland Love Huguley before his untimely death in a car accident. She and her only child, Peggy Ann, were living in Texas at the time. Later, she remarried Keith V Johnson and they moved to Calif. No issue. MaryBeth was well known for her sense of humor.
Finding a joke in almost any situation. She was a caring person and said, “Love is the answer to everything.”

She belonged to the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR). Originally in the year 1990, she joined the Los Cerritos Chapter in Long Beach, Calif, and in the year 2000, she transferred her membership to the Rainier Chapter in Seattle, Wash. She and her husband Keith kept adventurous and traveled to different countries and most of the states all around the U.S during their time together. MaryBeth was born one day before the 19th amendment was ratified giving women the right to vote. She made sure to research the issues and make a decision every time voting time came around. She encouraged women everywhere to become informed and to be well educated.

She was a dual member of the Order of the Eastern Star (OES) belonging to Poulsbo Chapter #235 in Washington and Mar Vista Chapter #511 which later merged into the Long Beach Chapter #173 in Calif. Her husband Keith belonged to the Monte Vista Masonic Lodge and El Baikal Shrine Club in Anaheim, Calif, and the Nile Shrine Club in Seattle. She always helped with the lady's and youth organizations. MaryBeth was a parent with Job’s Daughters back in the 1950s while her daughter was a member. She became very active with the Order of Rainbow Girls when she lived in Calif. during the 1960s. She was awarded the Grand Cross of Colors for the Rainbow Girls for her dedicated service.

She loved to sew, including tailoring, making a majority of her family’s outfits. She lovingly sewed her daughter’s wedding gown. She worked part-time at a material store in the 1970s to sustain her hobby. She passed down her passion and the tradition of hand sewing and quilting. She enjoyed cooking healthy foods saying, “you get to meet a lot of very nice people in the kitchen.” MaryBeth played in several clubs. She was an avid gardener, known to have successfully grown all types of beautiful plants. MaryBeth belonged to the Bainbridge Island and Poulsbo Garden Clubs; the Herbert Ihrig Arboretum Unit.

She was preceded in death by her husband Keith V. Johnson; her sister Pauline Helen Spoelstra, nee’ Manuel; and her brother Roy Manuel. She is survived by her daughter Peggy Johnson Booth (Ronald “J”} of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; and her 3 grandchildren: Patrick “J” Booth (Annette) of Mt Vernon, Wash.; Michael K. Booth (Doreen) and their children: (great-grandchildren) Hazel Adelaide Booth; Asher Booth of Chicago, Il.; Heathere Cericola, nee’ Booth (Jeffrey A.) of Bainbridge Island, Wash. and their children (great-grandchildren) Christopher P. Cericola, of Seattle, Wash.; AlexaNoelle E Perkey, nee’ Cericola (Calvin D.) and their child (great-great-grandchild) Amelia Ann Cericola Perkey of Ft. Riley, Kansas; Nephew Paul Bingham (Betty); Niece Helen Rose nee’ Bingham; and several other relatives.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in her name to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland, Ore. or Hospice, or a charity of your choice. The family would like to say thank you to the caregivers at the MARC, the Madrona, and Hospice for all the love and care they provided to MaryBeth.
