Peter Bang-Knudsen Sr. passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was 84 years old.
Born in Esbjerg, Denmark, on September 13, 1941, Peter immigrated to the United States with his family in 1950, settling in Oakland, California. He remained deeply proud of both his Danish heritage and his American citizenship throughout his life. His immigration journey shaped his appreciation for family, hard work, opportunity, and the values that guided him every day.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Oregon, Peter was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps in 1964. He rose to the rank of Captain before honorably completing his military service in 1969. The discipline, resilience, and sense of duty he developed during those years remained hallmarks of his character throughout his life.
Following his military service, Peter joined the family housewares business and spent nearly six decades building a successful career. Through hard work, entrepreneurial vision, and a keen eye for emerging trends, he helped grow the company into a respected business that continues today. He took particular pride in helping pass the family business to a fourth generation of Bang-Knudsens, ensuring that the legacy begun by his father would continue for years to come.
Peter's greatest joy was his family. After moving to Bainbridge Island in 1978, he and his wife Jill built a home filled with love, laughter, hospitality, and tradition. Jill was his best friend, trusted confidante, and partner in life. Together they built a life centered on family, friendship, and community.
When Jill passed away in 2020, Peter felt her loss deeply. Though he missed her every day, he remained devoted to his family and found great joy in spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Peter approached life with curiosity, enthusiasm, and a sense of adventure. He traveled extensively, visiting dozens of countries across five continents. He became an avid scuba diver later in life, completing more than 250 dives, and was always eager to learn something new or take on a fresh challenge. Whether birding in remote corners of the world, exploring new destinations, reading about current events, or stepping forward to teach rowing and motor boating merit badges when his son's Boy Scout troop needed help, Peter embraced life fully and encouraged others to do the same.
He loved cooking, entertaining family and friends, and creating traditions that brought people together. Christmas was his favorite time of year, and he delighted in preparing a traditional Danish feast complete with multiple courses of herring and family recipes passed down through generations. Whether preparing a meal, planning a trip, or sharing stories and laughter around the table, Peter found joy in the company of those he loved.
Peter is survived by his sons, Peter Bang-Knudsen Jr., Paul Bang-Knudsen, and Jacob Bang-Knudsen; his grandchildren Peter III, William, Mathias, Hanne, Willa, and Mads Bang-Knudsen; his sister Karen; and many extended family members, friends, and colleagues whose lives he touched.
Peter leaves behind a legacy of love, service, generosity, perseverance, and curiosity. He taught those around him the value of hard work, loyalty, gratitude, and lifelong learning. Most importantly, he showed by example what it means to be a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in Peter's memory to the Bainbridge Schools Foundation.
