William Playter

d. June 24, 2012

passed away peacefully at his home on Bainbridge Island with his wife of 51 years Ruth Ann by his side.He grew up in Poulsbo with his parents Richard & Marion Playter, brothers Richard and David along with baby sister Carol who have all unfortunately preceded him in death. He was part of the class of 1961 at North Kitsap High School and graduated from the Police Academy.Bill is survived by his wife, daughter Kimberly (Richard) Larvia of Tracyton WA, sons Kevin (Barbara) Playter of Kennewick WA and Ken Playter of Bainbridge Island along with 8 grandchildren (Chelise, Calvin, Courtney, Erin, Amanda, Bill, Kiyle & Kenicia), 10 1/2 great-grandchildren and beloved pug dog Joey.Throughout his life he worked at many jobs from selling insurance, car sales, construction, Boeing, Todd Shipyard until he became a reserve officer with Winslow Police Dept. and later a full time police officer where he found his niche, he later hired on with Poulsbo Police Dept. and stayed for 23 years retiring in 2008.He absolutely loved and was proud to serve the cities of Winslow and Poulsbo, he considered the police community as part of his family and we didn't mind sharing because it truly gave him great joy. We're sure he would still be serving the community in some capacity if the brain tumor had not prevented him doing so.The only thing Bill loved more than the PD is his family especially his wife Ruth Ann, even near the end all he wanted was to be near her. He was so fun to be around had a quick wit, loved to tease sometimes incessantly and loved to smile. He was a great husband, provider, son, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. After Bill and Ruth raised their 3 children, they had the opportunity to raise one of their grandchildren. This put a new spring in his step and gave him the opportunity to do things with Kiyle that he wished he could have with his older children. He became a scout leader, helped with baseball, football and raised a fine young man. Those years provided great joy for him and all of us.A celebration of life will be held for Bill at the Poulsbo Yacht Club at 18129 Fjord Drive, Poulsbo on Saturday July 14th at 2:00 pm. Please stop by and share your memories of if you can.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Kathi Goertzen Foundation to raise funds for brain tumor research. 3213 West Wheeler Street, Box 157 Seattle, WA 98199. http://kathigoertzen.com
